We make it easier for local residents to take small actions that have a big impact on our collective goal to live in a zero-emissions community by 2031. To protect and enhance our natural environment and increase our region's environmental sustainability. 3. <image:caption>We needed our local council, The Borough of Queenscliffe, to first declare a climate emergency and commit to developing a response plan in partnership with the community. Following incredible community support (2145 signatures to a petition, hundreds of people attending a second meeting, countless letters to Councillors), this was achieved at the Council meeting seven weeks later on 19 December 2019.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Despite hurdles presented by COVID-19 throughout 2020, the community again came together to develop one of Australia’s most ambitious Climate Emergency Response Plans (our CERP) via the creation of a randomly selected Community Panel, numerous workshops and surveys.</image:caption>

      <image:title>History - Action The Plan</image:title>
<image:caption>Since that day, the QCAN Committee has met monthly regarding our implementation of the 49 actions across eight pillars with the Plan. We are focused on supporting our community to implement the actions within the CERP that they defined, and we spend considerable time sharing our journey with other communities, so they can replicate our success. As the smallest local government in Victoria, we believe we have a unique chance to become a world leader in responding effectively to the climate crisis. We can overcome the climate emergency if we work together, and we are excited to work with our community and Council to achieve this.</image:caption>

Statement on QCAN: In October 2019 I started a conversation about the increasing impacts of climate change in our community and found myself accidentally leading a local movement that resulted in the Borough of Queenscliffe declaring a climate emergency and committing to developing a response plan in partnership with the community. After four years as President I am now an active committee member and love working across all of the CERP pillar groups, but get the greatest enjoyment when bringing different people and community groups together to solve complex issues - it's amazing what can happen when we all work together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In our capacity as a local representative body on local climate emergency response, QCAN works closely with the Borough of Queenscliff to enact the key pillars of the Borough’s Climate Emergency Response Plan (CERP). The CERP is a community-led initiative developed in partnership with the community and the Council. QCAN has been an active, informal partner in developing the CERP. The Borough of Queenscliffe is committed to this community-led approach as implementing the many actions in the CERP requires ongoing community engagement and collaboration. We hold regular meetings with the Council to ensure action is focused on the right outcomes, with regard to implementing the CERP. This unique partnership aims to ensure that the community’s Climate Emergency Response Plan has every chance of success.</image:caption>

It is a whole-of-community approach, including working closely with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, that provides a ten year road map to ensure we meet our ambitious targets. It is governed by a Community Panel – a randomly selected group of 34 permanent and non-permanent residents – the Borough, and QCAN.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Queenscliffe Energy Efficient Homes Program was an initiative of Queenscliffe Climate Action Now (QCAN) delivered by Geelong Sustainability and supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe. The program concluded in July 2024. The aim of the program was to provide residents of the Borough of Queenscliffe with expert advice on how to improve the energy efficiency of their homes in order to reduce their energy consumption and emissions. It represents a key action under the Sustainable Buildings pillar of our Climate Emergency Response Plan.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In November 2022 the Victorian government committed to funding 100 community/neighbourhood batteries across the state over the next four years. Following years of campaigning and support from Alison Marchant, MP for Bellarine, The Borough of Queenscliffe was successfully awarded four of the 100 batteries. QCAN works closely with the neighbourhood battery team at Mondo - who are installing, operating and maintaining four new neighbourhood batteries in Queenscliffe, the community and the Council to roll the program out.</image:caption>
